Oh, it is fear. Fear is always a basic element of fascist strategy. Here’s an example that might be less than obvious: Wannabe fascist leaders emphasize parenthood not just to swell the ranks of the race, but also to enhance opportunities for extortion. In this case, a correspondent’s independence and risk tolerance can be curtailed by a threat to his/her ability to provide (firing), not to mention more overt and direct threats and stochastic violence that MAGA faithful are, as we have seen, clearly very happy to visit on the family of intrepid reporters with plausible deniability. This is how fascism works.
The celebration of liberty should not be thought of as a reward or an interlude. It is not a break from the slog — it is necessary. More is better. I believe a major reason that we face a fascist threat within living memory of WWII is that we turned civic engagement too much into work. We made/make it industry, in our Puritanical/Calvinist way, to our own detriment. The way to strengthen liberty is to appreciate and celebrate it, and the only way to pass that joy along is to personally demonstrate it.
