Spoiler alert: We're on Team Freedom

You may have noticed that the name of this newsletter and the name of our podcast has changed from What the Gerrymander to Freedom Over Fascism. We made this change in the hopes that the title itself will convey our ultimate message and our mission….to protect our freedoms against the very real threat (and reality) of fascism in MAGA-captured states and the entire United States. We’ll start Season 2 of the podcast soon, and I’ll continue to interview experts, historians, activists, and writers on Team Freedom. I’ll continue to write about these interviews and other topics that come up. And I’ll launch a Patreon for readers or listeners who are interested in bonus content (and so I can continue to create this content for you).

Here’s also a reminder of where we stand as MAGA-captured states and as a country right now with the threat of fascism looming terrifyingly over all of us. I’ve been using the F-word for a while. It has been clear to me that the MAGA GOP wants to institute a new form of government…a fascist form…for several years now. Merriam-Webster defines fascism as: “a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition.”

Well, this week, the GOP said the quiet part out loud and announced “Project 2025,” which outlined their plan to institute a fascist dictatorship should they win the presidency. (Read here)

Friends, for those of us paying attention, this is no surprise. It’s another call to action. It’s a call for all of us to work on registering more voters, talking to the GenZ people in our lives and convincing them to vote, and making sure everyone we know votes. Even though we’re fighting fascism, democracy is the only way we win the fight. And we need to fight at every level, which is why Hoosier Victory Alliance is working on launching Blue Indiana, to contest every state legislative seat. It’s why Mary and I founded HVA, and its also why we consult with campaigns on their strategy and communications.
