And here it is. There's no single easy answer. Added the Creators I overlooked before. Thanks for adding them in the comments. Next up, a manifesto on creators working together.
I talk about that with Tara McGowan, publisher of Courier Newsroom, on the podcast coming out on Monday. We talked about the truth leaning left. And most of us seek to be fact based, but not neutral...many of us are deliberately values based.
Doing this also, though I just started this new "last third of my life devoted to saving democracy," so my following (the real one) isn't that big yet.
Missed a few Joyce Vance, Hartman is good, Robert Reich and Heather collaborate a lot. Tiedrich has some good insights jay kuo. Thr problem is there are so many 🙄.
Authors cannot work independently in this environment. They will get burned out and will not get their work out to enough people. And readers won’t be able to read everything. Contrarian on Substack has the right idea but early stages. I’d like to add Lucian Truscott, and TCINLA. These two have the perspectives that elderly statesmen in journalism can provide.
Thank you for this list. It is invaluable. I’m happy to report that i subscribe to many on your list, already. I have many favorites, too. But like you say, there’s so many awesome professional writers here. 💙✊🏾
Wonkette has been a reliable news source for me ever since Rebecca Schoenkopf took over the website and packed it full of first-class writers. Every one of their staff should be on your list.
Wonderful list, thank you! I suggest you add another scholar of authoritarianism and fascism (like Timothy Snyder and Rugh Ben-Ghiat): Thomas Zimmer, who writes Democracy Americana. Also, Paul Krugman is now on Substack. Finally, I'm curious what you think of Meidas+: I find the format easy to read and follow for a daily run-down. Thanks again.
You have a great list! Thank you! Please check out Bette Dangerous on here and her website. She is legit the shit. She also does RadPod with Jim Stewartson and HiFi.

Thanks for including me! Just followed you back on the sky!
Glad to! Would you be willing to restack it? And maybe repost on the Sky?

I hear you. I'm in the same boat, which is why we all need to work together!

You're right. I follow those guys too. I'll add them to the list anyway.
That’s a good problem!

We have to start working together. And not just the really big accounts, but smaller ones like mine, to create a more complete ecosystem.
I have had issues with The Atlantic due to their awful anti-trans takes, which are decidedly not fact-based. Are they better on other areas?
They are better in other areas. I think it depends on the writer.
Ok, thanks - hard for me (a trans woman) to ever forgive them for Singal’s article around 2018/19. But I used to love so much of their other stuff.

Great list. I would add Thom Hartmann here on Substack.
I would add Mosh Oinounou and Emily Amick (Emily is here on Substack) as well.
You should include Talking Points Memo to the list.

The Guard application will analyze several news outlets, declare how factual the article is, report the bias and blind spot.
