Gerrymandering, voter suppression, and how we all can take action

The first episode of our podcast dropped yesterday! You can listen to What the Gerrymander wherever you get your podcasts!

Here’s a quick clip of what you’re in for: David Pepper joins Heidi Beidinger and me to talk about how MAGA Republicans have captured statehouses across the country and passed extreme legislation that doesn’t align with the values of most of the people living there.

David tells us about the project he founded in Ohio, that we’re bringing to Indiana, with your help. Blue Ohio (Blue Indiana in our case) uses crowdfunding to contest every seat in the statehouse. Last year, with only 5 months in existence, Blue Ohio was able to give every candidate $5000. This enables a candidate in every race, and allows Dems to go everywhere in a state….even the areas of the states that Dems rarely visit because they don’t have the candidates or the funds.

We can see on the news and social media every day how MAGA Extremists introduce and pass bills in the statehouse that inhibit our freedom to give our kids a fact-based education, target trans people of all ages, and produce NO solutions that actually solve real problems in the states. And many of the people who are sponsoring the most extreme laws ran unopposed for their seats.

So, how do we begin to combat this?

1. We give recurring donations so we can crowdfund money to give to candidates in every seat. Once we have enough to establish Blue Indiana, every penny will go to candidates.

2. Every business, nonprofit, mayor, or group facing the public should have an easy way to register voters right at the front of their facility. This helps combat the voter purging the MAGA GOP employs to limit the numbers of people voting.

3. Everyone helps find people to run for state office.
