Excellent summation. There are several moving parts to the GOP's plan to subvert the outcome in November and I'm pretty sure you hit most of them. One thing I'd add is that the SAVE Act, Mike Johnson's move to reduce voting among blue populations, would disproportionately hurt women. 90% of married women take their husbands' names, and many do not have original source documents (like certified birth certificates) to "prove" they are US citizens. Their votes would be thrown out if republicans get their way, and the fight aint over yet. It's a chilling attempt, and more pundits need to discuss it.
Excellent piece. I agree with you 💯. Conservative media has only one reason for existing…lying to the public about both Democratic policies and the lack of reasonable policies put forward by DonOld. If Stephens is clueless about Kamala’s policies that’s on him. There has been much written about her and her rallies are frequently covered on TV and by local news. I’m tired of the same old same old with these people. If he can’t do his job as a journalist then he needs to get another job…maybe as a full time trump lackey.
Thank you!!! I cancelled my 25+ year digital NYTimes subscription after I read Stephens's op-ed last week. I couldn't stand it any longer how urban media blasts out its "balanced" drivvel which goes straight to right-wing airwaves and into the crucial swing states. Bill Maher and Stephanie Ruhle called Stephens out Friday night but it wasn't enough. Bret Stephens is decisive enough to enjoy his Blue City lifestyle but he can't decide between Kamala and Trump? He's a jackass as is the Times editor who hired him. When they fire him AND if Kamala wins, I will resubscribe--but am "undecided" on that. PS: I lived in New York City for years and now in rural Ohio on the ground. The urban media needs to listen to itself.
I think discharging a lot of student loans would be a major help to many young people. Many European countries charge nothing for a university education. I had a professor—actually an adjunct professor—when I was studying art who was Greek. She had earned her baccalaureate in Greece then an MFA and paid nothing. She went to Paris and attended l’Ecole des Beaux Arts free and earned a second MFA, then she attended UMass-Amherst and earned a third MFA, and I’m positive it cost her thousands of dollars. She wore the same clothes day after day to class. But that was her choice, you know? What people may not know is that when she gets a job she will be paid per degree she has earned, so all those degrees will contribute to her bottom line, so to speak. But how many Americans can afford to do that? Only if they study abroad it would seem.
The people who need this help are those who attended for-profit colleges that promised jobs and didn’t deliver. Most of them were already low income. And for many their degree has proved itself to be worthless. These are the people who really need help. The Harris/Walz campaign is promising help, and if we elect Democratic congresspeople we might be able to give it to them.
Oh boy- 1 name I have detested “Brett Stephens” - he lost his way a long time ago. Keeps digging a hole; perpetuates white supremacy, misogyny, the patriarchy- not enough words to describe how I feel. He lost his soul. Evident. Hence so has the NYT.

Absolutely true. And also Georgia's new hand counting ballot requirement is subverting voting integrity. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/09/24/georgia-election-board-hand-count-rule/75349261007/

Bret Stephens is a waste of word processing. I can’t read his stupid opinions because they are so weak, contrarian, and poorly thought out.
Great article, thank you
