A few hours after Kamala Harris became the nominee for President more than 40,000 Black women attended an organizing Zoom and raised $1.5 million dollars. THE SAME DAY! What followed was an avalanche of organizing and fundraising Zooms, including White Women for Harris, White Dudes for Harris, Jewish Women for Kamala, LGBTQ+ for Harris….and as many variations as you can imagine, including this week Geeks and Nerds for Kamala organized by Lynda Carter (1970s Wonder Women) with various fandoms. Apparently there was a face off between those who said “Live Long and Prosper” and those who said “May the Force Be With You.” (that’s a joke). The point is that Kamala Harris activated women around the country to fight for our freedoms. And leading the way were Black women activists who are the backbone of the party and the unsung leaders of the movement for freedom and democracy.
Last week I spoke with Emily Cain, former ED of EMILY’s list. We talked about her own experience being asked to run for office, and then serving in the Maine Statehouse as both Minority and Majority Leader. She urged women of all ages to run for office, because the stakes are so high and we need to be running candidates in every race on the ballot.
This year with a Black/Indian woman as our presidential candidate and more women governors than ever before, we all need to be thinking about what we can do to fight for freedom. And running for office is one of those things a lot of us don’t consider, but should. Emily and I discussed how far we’ve come, how the Trump abortion bans have raised the stakes immeasurably, how our lives are on the line, and how we can win if we all pitch in together. I really enjoyed talking to her, and I hope you’ll listen to our great conversation.
