It’s a big week, with the VP debate (without fact checking!) a large scale natural disaster, Trump threatening extreme violence, brownshirt style, Vance consorting with violent White Christian Nationalists, and always more.
So, yes, all that is happening, but one of the things we don’t talk enough about is voter protection. We definitely need to persuade people, both to vote Dem and to actually get off their couch and vote. We need to make sure they’re registered. We need to get them out on election day or before. But what do we need to do to make sure the votes are counted and certified properly, especially when we know that MAGA has been making a concerted effort to capture offices of county clerks and other position with the power to certify elections?
Kim Allen, one of my first guests back in early 2023, comes back to talk about what she’s doing in coordination with the Georgia Democratic Party and other legal experts to ensure certification, train poll workers, educate voters, and in all ways ensure a free and fair election where everyones’ votes are counted and certified.
MAGA considers January 6 a dress rehearsal for this election…Donald Trump has even told his voters they needn’t show up b/c the fix is in. There have been “war games” with people like Doug Jones and real former officials to hash out what might be done in the case of a true coup attempt that includes the military. And legal experts have been in the trenches year round shoring up adherence to statutes already on the books and fighting for REAL free and fair elections, not the coded “Election Integrity” BS that really means cheating.
Kim and her colleagues in the Georgia Dem party and other orgs are also waging a vigorous voter education campaign so people will know where and how to vote. And in Georgia, they can request a ballot by mail, which they fill out manually and send in for counting.
I hope you’ll listen to how Georgia is protecting the vote and activate to protect the vote in your own state. To do that, go to www.powerthevote.org and volunteer.
That’s it for now, but more to come with each passing hour.
