This spring, I spoke with Matthew Taylor on Christian Nationalism, particularly the New Apostolic Reformation and seven mountains crowd. This is more relevant than ever. JD Vance is holding an event today with Lance Wallnau, one of the “prophets” of the White Christian Nationalist movement, who says that Kamala Harris practices witchcraft.
Dr. Taylor has also recently published a book on these uber-extreme wackadoodle, but seriously powerful and dangerous folks. The Violent Take it By Force, published this month,
“Over the last decade, the Religious Right has evolved. Some of the more extreme beliefs of American evangelicalism have begun to take hold in the mainstream. Scholar Matthew D. Taylor pulls back the curtain on a little-known movement of evangelical Christians who see themselves waging spiritual battles on a massive scale. Known as the New Apostolic Reformation, this network of leaders and believers emerged only three decades ago but now yields colossal influence, galvanizing support for Trump and far-right leaders around the world.”
Lance Wallnau is a central figure of the violent radicalized Christian right, and Matt Taylor discusses all of it there. According to The Guardian’s article on the Vance event:
Wallnau has also written in his book, God’s Chaos Candidate: Donald J Trump and the American Unraveling, that he believes the United States is headed toward a potentially bloody clash – a “fiery trial” that will come “both to believers and nations”. In his book, in which he also claims to have met with Trump on multiple occasions, Wallnau writes that the US is entering a “crucible”, which will involve “a ‘conflict’ of ideologies, often arms, to determine a victor in the power clash”.
This is one of the best conversations I’ve ever had on the podcast, and I urge you to listen, take it seriously and literally, and share it with friends and families to give context to the world JD Vance is embracing front and center.
