We’ve reached episode 60! One of the most important reasons I started this podcast was for activists all over the country to learn about how other activists are organizing, be inspired, and perhaps use some of what they heard in their own area. This episode is a prime example. Earlier this season I spoke to Lauren Baer (47), Managing Director of Arena. This conversation, along with that of Abby Kisicki (58), features graduates of Arena’s training. In this episode, I talk to an activist in Kentucky. I’ve spoken with grassroots organizers in Arizona (42), Texas (56), Virginia (30), Missouri (6), New York (53), and other states. I hope that organizers across the country can learn from each other and even meet each other. Please go and take a look through the archives. Next week’s episode will feature Canton, NC Mayor Zeb Smathers. Then I’ll post some of our best episodes before I return to recording in August.
Mason Kalinsky is an organizer in Kentucky. He’s the director of Hood to the Holler, an organization founded by Charles Booker focused on leveraging momentum for positive change in Kentucky to build broad coalitions, breaking down barriers of race and class, and fueling a people centered movement to build power and transform our future.
He organizes in the hood of Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky and the holler of Appalachia. He’s also a trans activist working on political campaigns to elect transgender candidates to state and local offices in Kentucky
