The podcast is getting a slight glow up. I’m now going to try to uplift the women who are making positive, progressive, pro-democracy political change, so you’ll be seeing/hearing great interviews with the women who are leading the way in our politics. There are tons of really great people out there, both women and men, who I’d love to chat with, but I want to spend a little more time talking to badass women.
This conversation with
of is one of those conversations. We talk about what we need to do to take back power in red states, and among the highest priorities is running candidates in every race up and down the ballot. I have talked to a lot of folks about this, but you can never feature too many people doing the hard work of helping candidates in the reddist, most rural statehouse districts in the country. At the bottom, I’ll link to each of my conversations about contesting all the races. Next week you’ll hear my conversation with Emily Cain, former Prez of Emily’s List, former speaker of the Maine state house, and current advocate for freedom and democracy. One of the reasons I decided to talk to more women is that the policies MAGA has implemented in the states they’ve captured directly impacts women the most. This week, we learn about Candi Miller, a Black Georgia woman who was afraid to go to the hospital to get an abortion for a pregnancy doctors had told her might kill her. She got a medication abortion, but 5% of these require an extra dose or a D&C to complete the abortion. She died at home because she knew she couldn’t get a D&C in the hospital.
We also learned about Amber Thurman, another Black Georgia woman, who went to North Carolina for an abortion in July 2022, right after the Dobbs Decision. She went to the hospital when she was bleeding uncontrollably after her abortion didn’t complete, but they wouldn’t give her the D&C she needed and waited for her to nearly die before operating on her. She died on the operating table from sepsis, an body-wide infection that shut down all of her organs. These are but two of the women who are left to bleed out, denied medical care b/c of abortion bans instituted by old white men (and some women) who think they know more about women’s healthcare decisions than the women and the doctors themselves. Here’s Lawrence O’Donnell’s commentary yesterday.
There’s a lot more to say about women dying from abortion bans, Black maternal mortality in general, and the corrupt MAGA SCOTUS that overturned Roe v Wade. We’ll definitely talk more about it in the coming weeks, months, and (maybe?) years.
In the meantime, I hope you enjoy my conversation with Michele and check out the other conversations I’ve had with people about downballot statehouse races. I’ll even throw in a link to my convo with an Dr. Katie McHugh, an OBGYN who specializes in abortion care about what she was seeing early 2023 here.
Thank you.
Stephanie
