Hi friends,
I just talked to
McGowan, the publisher of Newsroom, a video-first values based, fact based news organization. We know that corporate legacy media failed, bent the knee, and is now being denied access to the Trump regime anyway.Tara thinks very deeply about how to report news and information that reaches people disconnected with politics through social media and vertical video. We talked about the information war, which is one of the most important elements of this unstable, deeply unsettling, and frankly confusing moment. Our side (by which I mean people interested in freedom and inclusion) consumes fact-based media (see my post about fact based sources here). Their side lives in a sealed information ecosystem where reality is turned upside down. And the majority of Americans don’t pay attention or don’t know where to go for fact-driven news. I asked why we haven’t been able to build a media ecosystem from the ground up that cross promotes, connects, and reinforces other voices with the same message. Spoiler alert: it’s funding.
Tara and I talked about how to widen the aperture of values-based information consumption to include non-political content, pop culture, and entertainment as well. Because as we all know, the Right has learned to talk about politics without talking about politics. My list of creators, from big to small, is a start at least of aggregating our values-based news. Please listen to Tara (or read the transcript) for more detail about building a wider, fact and values based media that spawns copycats.
I’ve provided a short clip, audio, transcript, and the unedited interview here. Please listen/watch/read as you prefer. This is the first of many conversations about the information war.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this discussion.
Here’s the whole interview:
